Microphone Sony ECM-W5

The Sony ECM-W5 microphones are a compact wireless microphone system for interviews, reports, documentary videos and professional videography. The set includes two transmitter microphones with built-in omnidirectional microphones, one receiver and a charging case. The system supports audio recording up to 48 kHz/32-bit float and 96 kHz/24-bit, has 64 GB of built-in memory in each transmitter for backup recording and offers a wireless range of up to 500 meters in line of sight. USB-C and 3.5 mm audio connections are provided, as well as digital connection via the Multi Interface Shoe with compatible Sony cameras.

One of the key features of the ECM-W5 is its support for 32-bit floating point audio at 48 kHz, as well as recording at up to 96 kHz/24-bit quality. The floating point format provides significant freedom in post-processing, especially when the volume of the voice changes or sudden sound peaks occur. With a compatible Sony camera, the digital audio signal can be recorded directly into the video file, making it easier to synchronize and organize the material during editing. The possibilities depend on the compatibility of the specific camera and the settings selected.

Each of the two transmitters has 64 GB of built-in memory, which allows you to record audio directly to the device as a backup. This is especially useful for interviews, reports and documentary photography, when the loss of an important line cannot be easily compensated. The recorded files can be transferred to a computer via the charging case and a suitable USB-C cable. The built-in memory provides additional security and allows you to have a copy of the audio independently of the wireless transmission to the camera.

The built-in microphones are omnidirectional, meaning they pick up sound from all directions around the speaker. This is useful for interviews and conversations when the person is moving or changing position. The frequency range is 20 Hz – 20 kHz at 48 kHz sampling and reaches 20 Hz – 40 kHz at 96 kHz. The maximum input sound pressure is 124 dB SPL. Each transmitter also has a 3.5 mm input for a compatible external microphone, such as a lavalier microphone, which may be preferable in certain shooting conditions. Two windscreens are included to reduce air flow noise.

The wireless connection provides a range of up to 500 meters under suitable conditions and a direct line of sight between the transmitter and receiver. The actual distance depends on obstacles, radio interference and the operating environment. The receiver features a 3.5 mm stereo output for analog connection to compatible cameras and other devices, as well as USB-C connectivity. With compatible Sony cameras, the connection via the Multi Interface Shoe allows digital audio transmission without a separate audio cable. The system also supports recording of up to four digital audio channels with a compatible configuration.

Each transmitter and receiver can operate for up to seven hours when used alone and in suitable conditions. With the transmitters charged via the case, the total microphone usage time can reach up to 11 hours. The receiver, when mounted on a compatible camera, can be powered via the Multi Interface Shoe. The charging case makes it easy to store and prepare the kit between shoots. The compact size, backup recording and the ability to connect a digital camera make the Sony ECM-W5 a practical solution for mobile videography and journalistic work.
