Description
The Nikon NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S is a professional telephoto zoom lens designed for sports photography, reportage, wildlife photography, and other situations where you need to follow fast-moving action from a distance. The combination of a 120–300mm focal length, a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture, and a built-in 1.4x teleconverter provides great flexibility without the need to change lenses or attach a separate teleconverter. It is part of Nikon's professional S-Line series and is designed for Nikon Z mount mirrorless cameras, including models with full-frame FX sensors.
Key benefits of the Nikon NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S:
Built-in teleconverter 1.4x:
The teleconverter allows you to instantly increase the focal length from 120–300 mm to 168–420 mm without having to change lenses or attach a separate teleconverter. This is especially useful in sports and reportage photography, when the action is moving away and you need to quickly get a tighter frame. When the teleconverter is activated, the maximum aperture changes from f/2.8 to f/4.
Constant maximum aperture f/2.8:
The f/2.8 aperture provides high light output throughout the 120–300mm range, without the maximum aperture changing as the focal length varies. This allows for shorter exposures for fast-moving scenes and for working in low-light conditions, such as stadiums and gyms. The large aperture also helps to achieve a shallow depth of field and visually separate athletes from the background.
SSVCM autofocus system:
The Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor is designed to provide fast, precise and smooth focusing. This is important when shooting football, motor sports, wildlife and other moving subjects where the photographer needs to react instantly. The smooth operation of the system is also useful for video recording, when controlled focus changes are required.
Optical VR stabilization up to 6.5 stops:
Compensates for unwanted camera shake and helps produce sharper images when shooting handheld. On compatible cameras that support Synchro VR, the stabilization can work in conjunction with the in-body stabilization for more effective compensation. This is especially valuable when working at 300mm or using the built-in teleconverter, when small camera movements are more noticeable in the frame.
Professional optics from the S-Line series:
The design includes specialized ED, Super ED, aspherical, fluorite and SR elements that help control chromatic aberrations and other optical imperfections. Meso Amorphous Coat and ARNEO Coat reduce reflections, flare and ghosting in challenging lighting conditions. A fluorine coating on the front element makes cleaning easy, and nine rounded diaphragm blades help create smooth bokeh.
Internal zoom without additional lens extension
The length of the lens remains constant as you change focal length and focus. This makes working with a monopod or tripod more predictable, as you don't have to compensate for the constantly changing physical balance of the lens. The design is especially practical for long-term shooting of sporting events, when the equipment needs to remain stable and easy to control.
The built-in 1.4x teleconverter extends the focal range to 168–420 mm in one operation. In standard mode, the lens offers 120–300 mm with a maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout the range. When the teleconverter is activated, the focal length increases to 168–420 mm and the maximum aperture becomes f/4. This is especially useful for football, tennis and other sports, when the photographer needs to quickly switch from a wider shot to a close-up of an athlete without changing equipment. The f/2.8 aperture in standard mode helps to use shorter exposures in low light and to separate the subject from the background through a shallow depth of field.
The autofocus system uses a Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor (SSVCM), designed for fast, precise and smooth focusing. This is important when tracking athletes, moving cars or animals, when the moment to capture may last only a fraction of a second. The built-in VR optical stabilization system compensates for unwanted camera shake and provides up to 6.5 stops of effectiveness in certain conditions and a compatible camera that supports Synchro VR. This helps to achieve sharper images when shooting handheld, especially at longer focal lengths.
The optical construction includes 30 elements in 24 groups, including ED, Super ED, aspherical, fluorite and SR elements. Meso Amorphous Coat and ARNEO Coat are designed to reduce reflections, flare and ghosting when there are strong light sources in or near the frame. A fluorine coating on the front element makes it easy to clean from dirt. The nine rounded diaphragm blades help create smooth bokeh, which is useful for portraits of athletes and separating the subject from a busy background.
The internal focusing mechanism and internal zoom maintain the overall length of the lens when focusing and changing the focal length. This makes it easier to work with a monopod and tripod, as the balance of the equipment remains more constant. The minimum focusing distance varies depending on the selected focal length from 0.98 m at 120 mm to 2 m at 300 mm. The maximum magnification is 0.18x without the teleconverter and reaches 0.25x when using it, which allows for the capture of relatively small details without the lens being specifically designed for macro photography.
The body is made using magnesium alloy and features seals for increased resistance to dust and moisture in suitable conditions. The lens weighs approximately 2735 g and measures approximately 128 mm in diameter and 353.5 mm in length. A 112 mm diameter front filter and a 46 mm sliding rear filter are provided via the included holder. The tripod collar is compatible with Arca-Swiss clamps with screw tightening. Despite its professional construction, weight remains an important factor for extended reporting, so the monopod is a practical choice for sports work.
