Description
The Audio-Technica BP4073 is a professional condenser shotgun microphone designed for independent film productions, television broadcasts, and documentaries. With its supercardioid and lobar polar pattern, it provides directional sound capture and limits the influence of side and rear sound sources. Its directivity is comparable to that of longer shotgun microphones, making it suitable for situations where precise targeting of the sound source is desired without the use of a larger microphone.
The microphone is end-addressable, allowing it to be aimed directly at the sound source. This makes it suitable for boom mounting or off-camera positioning when filming dialogue, interviews and documentary scenes. Its monophonic construction is designed to record a single main sound source, with the supercardioid/lobar polar pattern helping to isolate it from the environment.
The BP4073 features a switchable low-pass filter and a -10 dB attenuator. The low-pass filter operates at 80 Hz with a slope of 18 dB per octave and can be used to reduce unwanted low-frequency interference. The attenuator allows the microphone to operate at higher sound pressure levels, with the maximum allowable level reaching 151 dB SPL with the pad activated, compared to 141 dB SPL without it.
The microphone uses a direct-coupled output and low-noise electronic circuitry. Its high sensitivity of -29 dBV/Pa reduces the need for additional amplification when recording, and a dynamic range of 128 dB at 1 kHz and maximum sound pressure allows for operation with a wide range of sound levels. The equivalent noise level is 13 dB, A-weighted. The frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz and a smooth rise in the presence region contribute to the capture of detailed sound, suitable for dialogue and other sound elements in film and television productions.
The BP4073’s directivity is complemented by off-axis isolation of over 5 dB at 60° and over 15 dB at 120° and 180°, which helps to limit sounds coming from the sides and behind the microphone. The housing is made with an ultra-lightweight construction, making it easy to use the microphone on a boom or in mobile shooting configurations. It weighs 99 g and measures 21 mm in diameter and 233 mm in length.
A windscreen is included to reduce the effects of wind when recording outdoors. The BP4073 is powered by 48 V phantom power and has an analog output via a 3-pin XLR connector. Its mounting thread is 5/8"-27 female, and a 3/8"-16 thread can also be used with the included adapter. The microphone is black and is designed for professional audio recording configurations where directivity, low weight and a clean signal are important.
