One of the lens' biggest features is its 12mm wide-angle focal length, which provides a significantly wider perspective than traditional 14mm or 16mm ultra-wide-angle lenses. This allows for dramatic compositions with a strong perspective and an impressive sense of scale. The constant F2.8 aperture throughout the range gives you more freedom when shooting in low light, including astrophotography, night landscapes, cityscapes and interior photography without the need to use high ISO settings.
The optical construction includes 17 elements in 12 groups, including one XGM, three GM, one XLD and three LD elements. They work together to effectively suppress spherical and chromatic aberrations, reduce peripheral blur and maintain high resolution from the center to the edges of the frame. Particular attention has been paid to coma correction, which is a key factor in astrophotography, where point light sources must remain clear and well-shaped even at the periphery of the image. AX (Anti-reflection eXpand) and BBAR-G2 coatings further reduce flare and ghosting, ensuring high contrast, natural colours and a clear image even in strong backlighting.
For autofocus, the Tamron AF 12-20mm F/2.8 DI III VXD uses the proven VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) system. The linear motor provides extremely fast, precise and almost silent operation, making it suitable for both dynamic photography and professional video shooting. The minimum focusing distance is just 18 cm at 12 mm and 28 cm at 20 mm, which allows impressive close-ups with a pronounced perspective and strong separation of the foreground from the background.
Despite its rich optical design, the lens remains compact and portable at 119.3 mm in length and weighing only 570 g. The body is designed for active field work, offering convenience during long hikes, trips and all-day shooting. For even greater functionality, the model features an AF/MF switch, MF Lock, Zoom Lock, aperture control ring, Click ON/OFF switch and a USB Type-C port for customizing functions via the TAMRON Lens Utility app.
