The optical construction is complex and precise, with 18 elements in 13 groups, designed to deliver high resolution, excellent micro-contrast, and effective control of chromatic and spherical aberrations, even at wide open aperture. The lens maintains consistent optical performance from the center to the edges of the frame, with a field of view reaching 114°, without compromising detail.
The aperture is made up of 11 rounded blades, which is rare for such a wide-angle lens and allows for softer bokeh and more natural light transitions. The minimum focusing distance of 24 cm (0.11x magnification) enables dynamic compositions with a pronounced perspective and a strong sense of depth.
The focus system uses VCM (Voice Coil Motor) technology, providing extremely fast, accurate and almost silent autofocus. This makes the lens equally suitable for both stills and professional video, including when working with gimbals. Internal focusing keeps the physical dimensions unchanged and improves stability during movement.
For videographers, the ability to use rear gel filters is particularly valuable, allowing easy exposure control in bright light without the need for bulky front filter systems. The lack of optical stabilization is compensated for by the wide angle and compatibility with Canon's IBIS systems.
The body meets L-series standards, protected against dust and moisture, with a fluorine coating on the front element for easier cleaning. Despite the serious optics, the lens remains relatively compact at around 112 mm in length and 578 g in weight, making it practical for field work.
