The Audient Nero audio interface is a professional monitor controller designed as a central control unit for studios where accurate monitoring and reliable signal control are crucial.
Nero works with balanced and unbalanced analog inputs, optimized for standard studio levels. The nominal input level is +4 dBu for balanced signals and -10 dBV for unbalanced signals, allowing for seamless integration with professional audio interfaces, mixers, and external sources. Maximum input levels reach +18 dBu for balanced signals and +27 dBu for unbalanced signals, providing serious headroom and stable operation without clipping.
The controller also features an additional aux input with ±12 dB gain adjustment, allowing for easy connection of secondary sources such as mobile devices, players or external DACs. The balanced analog architecture provides CMRR of over 50 dB, and the talkback microphone input of over 80 dB at 1 kHz, contributing to low noise and high immunity to interference.
The talkback section is designed for professional studio communication. The microphone input offers 4 to 44 dB of gain, 48 V phantom power, and an extremely low self-noise of -128 dBu EIN. This allows the use of both dynamic and condenser microphones for clear and intelligible communication between the control room and the recording room.
Audient Nero also includes digital inputs via TOSLINK and coaxial connectors, supporting S/PDIF format. The device accepts digital signals with sampling rates from 44.1 to 192 kHz and bit depths up to 24-bit, making it compatible with a wide range of digital sources and audio interfaces. This allows direct digital monitoring without additional converters.
The output section is designed with a focus on accuracy and low distortion. The maximum output level to monitor speakers is +12 dBu, and THD+N values are extremely low – around 0.0015% at 0 dBu and 1 kΩ load. Crosstalk between channels exceeds 100 dB at the speaker outputs, ensuring a stable and precise stereo image.
The headphone outputs are optimized for a wide range of impedances, with a minimum load of 12.8 Ω. The maximum output power reaches 90 mW at 30 Ω, which is sufficient for studio headphones of various impedances. Low THD values and SNR around 100 dBu ensure clean and controlled monitoring during continuous operation.
Audient NERO uses an external 12 VDC power supply with a current of 2 A, which guarantees stable operation and sufficient power reserve for all analog and digital sections. The solid housing and compact dimensions make it suitable for central placement on the studio desk without taking up unnecessary space.
