Description
The Audio-Technica AT897 is a compact shotgun condenser microphone designed for directional recording of dialogue and sound in environments with increased ambient noise. Thanks to its lobar/supercardioid polar pattern, the microphone effectively isolates the main sound source from the front, while suppressing side and rear noise. This makes it extremely suitable for video production, documentaries, reports, interviews and working with cameras and field recorders.
The AT897 can operate on either phantom power (11–52 V) or a single AA battery, making it a flexible solution for situations where phantom power is not available. The microphone can handle levels up to 129 dB SPL on phantom power, and up to 115 dB SPL on battery power, without noticeable distortion. This allows for reliable recording of both speech and more dynamic scenes.
The AT897’s condenser capsule provides a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, ensuring natural voice reproduction with good detail and clarity. The directional lobar characteristic offers significant off-axis rejection – over 20 dB at 120°, which is key when shooting outdoors or in uncontrolled acoustic environments.
The built-in low-cut filter at 80 Hz with a slope of 18 dB/octave allows for effective reduction of low-frequency noise such as wind, traffic, and vibrations from stands or booms, without affecting voice intelligibility.
The microphone uses an XLR 3-pin analog output, making it compatible with professional cameras, audio recorders, and mixers. The 5/8"-27 mounting thread, with an included 3/8"-16 adapter, allows for easy attachment to booms, stands, and rigs.
Measuring approximately 279mm in length and weighing just 145g, the AT897 is balanced and comfortable for extended use, including mounting on a camera or using a boom during filming.
