The Viltrox AF PRO 85mm f/1.4 lens for Sony E-Mount is designed with a focus on professional portrait photography and videography, where high brightness, precise autofocus, and quality optical construction are key. With its 85mm focal length and f/1.4 aperture, this model offers effective subject isolation and achieves a soft, smooth transition to a defocused background.
The optical design is comprised of 15 elements in 11 groups, including three ED elements, one ultra-aspherical element, and nine high-refractive lenses. This configuration minimizes aberrations, maintains high sharpness and contrast throughout the frame, and reduces flare and ghosting thanks to a multi-layer nano-coating.
The lens’s focus system relies on a dual Hyper Sonic Wave Motor (HyperVCM) system, which provides fast, quiet and precise operation, including when shooting video or using face and eye detection technologies. The minimum focusing distance of 79 cm and maximum magnification of 0.13x allow for a variety of applications, including close-up portraits and details with well-defined focal transitions.
The lens features an 11-blade diaphragm that creates round and soft bokeh, helping to achieve a smooth background. The lens construction is all-metal, designed to be dust and moisture resistant, making it suitable for use in adverse weather conditions. Despite its sturdy construction, the weight remains relatively balanced at around 800 grams.
The lens includes a USB-C port for firmware updates, as well as a function (Fn) button and a De-Click switch on the aperture ring, which is useful when shooting video. The front filter thread diameter is 77mm, making it compatible with most professional filters on the market.
