The Laowa 9mm T5.8 Zero-D VV Cine lens is an extreme ultra-wide-angle cine lens designed for full-frame and VistaVision cinema cameras and equipped with an ARRI PL mount for professional cinema systems. With a focal length of 9mm and a cine aperture of T5.8, this model is designed for shots that require the widest possible field of view, a strong sense of space and strict control over image geometry.
The lens covers the VistaVision format with a 43.2mm diameter coating, ensuring full compatibility with full frame and large format sensors without vignetting. When operating in full frame format, the horizontal angle of view reaches an impressive 134.8°, allowing for the capture of extremely large scenes even in very confined spaces. Despite the extreme angle, the Zero-D optical concept keeps straight lines natural and controls the distortion typical of this class of lenses.
The Zero-D design is designed with a focus on minimal geometric distortion, making the lens particularly suitable for architectural scenes, interiors, virtual sets and VFX productions. The optical scheme includes 14 elements in 10 groups, optimized for uniform resolution and stable contrast across the entire frame, even with such a wide field of view.
The T5.8 aperture, stop-down to T22, provides predictable exposure control in cinema lighting and allows for a large depth of field, which is key in ultra-wide shots where spatial clarity is paramount. The 14-blade diaphragm contributes to smooth and even defocus in close-up situations.
A minimum focusing distance of just 12cm enables extreme close-up shooting, creating dramatic shots with a strong sense of perspective and depth. With a magnification ratio of approximately 0.21x and a macro ratio of approximately 1:4.7, the lens enables creative compositions combining detailed foregrounds and large-scale backgrounds in a single frame.
The Laowa 9mm T5.8 Zero-D VV Cine is a fully mechanical cine lens, with no electronic communication and no optical stabilization, ensuring reliable and repeatable performance in a professional environment. The focus ring has a travel of approximately 90° and the aperture ring has a travel of 43.6°, allowing for controlled and predictable focal transitions.
The focus and aperture rings are standard 0.8 MOD gearing, fully compatible with professional follow focus systems. The markings are available in both metric and imperial, making it easier to work with focus pullers in international productions. The lack of a front filter thread is in line with the extreme angle and allows the use of cinema matte boxes when needed.
With a front diameter of approximately 80mm, the lens is designed for easy integration into cinema rigs, stabilizers, and specialized platforms. The design is oriented towards intensive use and stable operation in complex shooting conditions.
