Description

The X-Rite ColorChecker® Classic color standard is used to achieve accurate color rendering when shooting with a digital camera in any light environment or when scanning with a flat-panel scanner. It is one of the most photographed objects on the planet and is the most commonly used digital reproduction tool for paintings and other images where accurate color rendering is paramount.

X-Rite ColorChecker® contains a carefully selected set of 12 natural colors that are found in everyday life (tree leaves, flowers, human skin), 6 precisely formulated boxes with primary colors (R, G, B, C, M and Y) and 6 slots with a gradual gray gradation. The surface of the standard reflects light in the same way as normal objects in nature.

The color values of the 24 elements of the ColorChecker® Classic have been standardized and unchanged since 1976, when the product was introduced as the GretagMacbeth ColorChecker. Their CIExyY and sRGB values are documented (you can download the table of values from the X-Rite website in PDF format). Using the ColorChecker® Classic and Adobe's free DNG Camera Editor tool, you can manually create an ICC profile for your digital camera.

While processing your images from a digital camera or scanner, you can make any necessary color adjustments so that the captured copy of the color reference reaches the same color values as the original. This process is technically accurate and independent of the precision of the work monitor, since you work on digital color values, not visually. This way you can reproduce the colors of the subject as accurately as possible.

Because of its popularity, the X-Rite ColorChecker® Classic has been successfully used for color correction in filmmaking.
