The Tamron AF 16-50mm F/2.8 Di III-A VXD is a standard zoom lens designed for mirrorless cameras with an APS-C sensor and Nikon Z mount. The 16-50mm focal range provides an equivalent field of view of 24-75mm on a full-frame camera, allowing you to capture a wide range of scenes. The wide angle is suitable for landscapes, architecture and interiors, while the longer focal lengths allow for portraits, detail and everyday photography. The constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 at all focal lengths provides the same brightness when zooming in and out, without the need to change the exposure due to the maximum aperture.
The optical construction includes 14 elements in 10 groups, and seven rounded diaphragm blades help to shape out-of-focus areas. The maximum aperture of f/2.8 allows for work in lower light and provides the ability to separate the subject from the background through a shallower depth of field. The minimum aperture of f/16 offers additional control over exposure and depth of field in bright ambient light or when more of the scene needs to be in focus. The angle of view ranges from 84° 4′ at the wide end to 32° 11′ at the maximum focal length, allowing for both wide coverage of the scene and tighter framing.
The VXD autofocus system is designed for fast and precise focusing in a variety of photographic situations. The lens allows focusing from as close as 15.2 cm at 16 mm and 29.2 cm at 50 mm. This provides the flexibility to capture close-up subjects, food, objects and details without the need for a dedicated macro lens. The maximum magnification is approximately 0.21–0.22x, and the reproduction ratio reaches 1:4.5, making it suitable for close-up shots when the subject needs to take up a larger portion of the frame.
Weighing approximately 306g and measuring 64.4mm in diameter and 79.6mm in length, the lens is a practical choice for photographers who want a versatile zoom lens without adding bulk to their equipment. The front filter diameter is 55mm, allowing the use of compatible protective, polarizing and neutral density filters. The model does not have built-in optical stabilization, so when shooting handheld in lower light, it is important to consider the shutter speed and stabilization capabilities of the camera.
