Description
The Audio-Technica AT2040 is a large-diaphragm dynamic microphone designed for podcasts, radio broadcasts, voice recordings, and interviews. Its dynamic capsule and 80 Hz to 16 kHz frequency response are ideal for capturing warm, full-bodied voices. The microphone operates in mono mode and is designed for situations where clarity and speaker presence are essential.
The AT2040 uses a hypercardioid polar pattern that concentrates sound pickup in front of the microphone and helps reduce unwanted noise from the sides and rear. This makes it suitable for home studios, podcasting, and other environments where complete acoustic isolation is not always possible. The end-address design means that the speaker must direct their voice toward the front of the microphone for optimal pickup.
The microphone features an integrated shockmount that reduces the transmission of vibrations from the stand to the capsule. This is useful when working on a desk or with a microphone boom, where movement and touch can create unwanted mechanical noise. An internal pop filter reduces air shocks when pronouncing consonants such as “p” and “b”, helping to ensure smoother and clearer voice recording.
The Audio-Technica AT2040 uses an analog 3-pin XLR output that can be connected to a compatible audio interface, mixer, or other recording and broadcast equipment. The microphone does not require its own power supply. It has no built-in controls or a pad switch, allowing level and other parameters to be adjusted through the connected audio equipment.
The body measures 14.53 × 5.21 cm and weighs 615 g, which ensures stability when mounted on a stand or microphone arm. The microphone has a 5/8"-27 mounting thread, and the included adapter allows the use of stands with a 3/8"-16 thread. A storage and transport case is also included in the kit, which makes it easy to carry the microphone between different recording locations.
