However, these more traditional filters are not dark enough to bring shutter speeds to cinematic levels as they take off from the air. Usually the sky is about 2 to 3 stops brighter than the earth, so if you shoot the sky, the earth is underexposed. Gradient filters help to balance this exposure, allowing you to extract more information from the scene. ND4: This filter reduces the shutter speed of the camera by 2 stops. It is most commonly used in the evening or dawn, or on cloudy days.
ND8: By reducing the shutter speed of the camera with 3 stops, the ND8 is the ideal filter for partly cloudy weather.
ND16: Use filter when it's sunny, ND16 reduces shutter speed by 4 stops, allows longer exposure on bright sunny days.
